Action Activities, Group Focus & File Archiving
Mastering active situations and keeping your growing digital file library structured ensures your family history remains safe for future generations.
Go-To Action Prompts
- Jumping Shots: Get down low to the ground with a 24mm wide-angle lens pointing upward. Have kids kick their feet up behind them at the peak of the jump for exaggerated airtime.
- Playground Swings: Position yourself to the side of the swing set. Lock your shutter speed at 1/1000s and capture the peak moment at the top of the arc.
- Running & Pets: Use Continuous Autofocus (AF-C) paired with Burst Mode. Have multiple children hold hands while running so they stay on the exact same focal plane.
Stopping Down for Group Portraits
When photographing multiple children or entire families arranged at varying distances, stop down your lens aperture to f/5.6 or f/8. Using a wide f/1.8 aperture on a group will leave one person sharp while everyone else falls out of focus. Place your focus point on the person in the middle row.
Digital Archiving & File Naming Conventions
Protect your visual archive by establishing clean digital file organization from day one:
- Folder Naming Format: Name folders by date and event:
YYMMDD LOCATION(e.g.,261005 PLAYGROUND). - Backups: Maintain a secondary backup on an external hard drive stored in a separate location, or archive high-resolution JPGs to a secure cloud storage account.
