Documenting childhood requires more than standard facial portraits. Paying attention to small details, background compression, and wide-angle perspective enriches your family visual archive.

Capturing Childhood Details

"Putting a person in every photo" doesn't require a face in every frame. Capture close-up detail shots that capture personality: skinned knees, muddy rainboots, a worn stuffed animal, or small hands holding ocean shells. Use a wide aperture to render the background context soft.

Background Compression with Telephoto Lenses

Long focal length lenses (such as an 85mm or 135mm) optically compress perspective. While objects five meters behind your subject appear somewhat soft, elements 30 meters in the distance melt into painterly background blur (bokeh).

Using Wide-Angle Lenses (24mm vs 50mm Distortion)

Wide-angle lenses (like a 24mm or 20mm) provide grand environmental context, but require careful framing. Placing a subject at the extreme outer edge of a wide-angle frame causes wide-angle distortion. Keep subjects near the center of the frame when shooting wide, or get low to the ground pointing up to exaggerate jumping height and action.
