Light Tunnels, Overcast Days & Backlight

Understanding how natural light behaves in different environments allows you to take keeper family portraits anywhere, in any weather.

Light Tunnels

'Light tunnels' are physical locations where light is blocked from the sides and top, but directional ambient light streams in from the front—such as alleyways, doorway archways, covered stairwells, or dense forest trails. Placing your subject inside a light tunnel facing the opening creates dramatic, soft facial lighting with beautifully darkened backgrounds.

High Overcast Skies

A bright overcast sky is portrait photographer's heaven. High white cloud cover acts as a giant natural softbox, scattering light evenly in all directions. On overcast days, you can shoot anywhere—parks, beaches, or playgrounds—without worrying about harsh shadows.

Creative Backlighting & Window Light

Positioning your subject between your camera and the sun produces dramatic backlighting, creating a striking halo effect around hair. Use backlighting whenever there is texture in the air—falling leaves, rain mist, sea spray, or dust.

Indoors, large north or south-facing windows serve as magnificent single light sources, casting soft, directional modeling shadows across the face.
