Locations: Beach, Parks & Urban Environments

Different locations present distinct lighting opportunities and technical considerations when photographing children.

The Beach

Water and kids produce magical candid moments, but harsh beach glare requires smart timing. Avoid sunny midday beach trips where harsh reflections cause intense squints. Go early in the morning, late in the afternoon, or anytime under overcast skies. Use telephoto zoom lenses (like a 70-200mm) to stay back from salt spray while keeping subjects isolated against the waves.

Green Spaces & Public Parks

Large public parks are ideal portrait locations. You can locate open shade under mature tree canopies on sunny days, or open grass fields on overcast days. Pro Tip: When infants sit directly on bright green lawns, green light reflects onto their skin. Place a neutral white or beige blanket underneath to maintain natural skin tones.

Urban Landscapes & Textured Walls

Cities offer built-in architectural sets. Mid-morning to mid-afternoon provides maximum ambient light penetrating city streets, doorways, and alleyways. Textured brick walls, colorful murals, and doorways serve as graphic background frames when shot with a fast prime lens.
