The Nifty 50 & Telephoto Zooms

The single best upgrade you can make for your family photography is picking up a 50mm prime lens—universally known as the 'Nifty Fifty'.

A 50mm focal length mimics how the human eye perceives perspective: not naturally wide, nor heavily zoomed. It works effortlessly for daily candid shots, close portraits, and group photos simply by stepping forward or back.

50mm f/1.8 vs. f/1.4 or f/1.2

A standard 50mm f/1.8 prime is arguably the most useful, compact, and high-value camera lens on earth at around $125. You do not need to spend three times as much on an f/1.4 version or ten times as much on an f/1.2 lens to capture professional-quality portraits of your kids.

When Telephoto Zooms Make Sense

While primes excel in low weight and optical speed, high-end constant aperture zooms (such as a 70-200mm f/2.8) dominate outdoor sports and beach settings. A 70-200mm zoom allows you to sit back on the park bench or sidelines and capture tight, isolated candid action shots from 30 meters away.

The #1 Camera Settings Mistake

The single most common mistake parents make is setting aperture and shutter speed values backward—for instance, trying to photograph moving kids at f/16 and 1/15s instead of f/2.8 and 1/500s. Shooting at 1/15s or 1/25s will produce blurry, soft photos almost every time when working with active children.
