Directing Kids Naturally: Never Say Cheese!
You cannot direct children like adult actors—let them be themselves. The secret to authentic family photography is keeping the entire process relaxed and fun.
Never Say "Cheese!"
Ordering a child to "Say Cheese!" or demanding "Smile!" produces tight, forced grimaces that have ruined family photos for decades. Genuine smiles and natural laughs occur when children are engaged in activity or banter. Speak to children directly with respect, keep energy high, and earn natural expressions.
The "Remove Yourself" Technique
When working with shy or reserved children who become self-conscious around a camera lens, give them physical space:
- Put on a long telephoto lens (such as an 85mm or 135mm).
- Step 10 to 15 meters back out of their personal space.
- Let them lose themselves in an activity (building sandcastles, exploring park trails).
- Work your way back in slowly once they forget about your presence.
Wardrobe Choices for Family Sessions
Children must feel comfortable in their clothing. Forcing kids into stiff, uncomfortable outfits creates resentment and awkward body language. Choose simple, classic clothing choices without loud commercial logos. Bright reds and warm colors pop beautifully against green park backgrounds.
